Building a strong online presence is essential for any paranormal romance author today, especially for those of us juggling multiple platforms and devices. I recently faced the challenge of bringing my website together, making sure my Linktree had all my important links, and writing my books from my phone—all while wrestling with a budget Windows 10 machine that stubbornly runs Windows 11. Needless to say, my poor laptop can't run Windows 11 and more than 1 tab of Chrome at the same time. I ended up at the library to finish as much as I can on my website.

Organizing My Online Links with Linktree

One of the first steps I took today was to centralize my online presence. As a self-publishing author, I have links scattered across social media, book retailers, my website, and newsletter sign-ups. Linktree became my go-to tool because it lets me gather everything in one place.

Here’s what worked for me:

  • Audit all my links: I listed every platform where I have a presence, including Amazon author pages, Goodreads, my blog, and social media profiles.

  • Prioritize important links: I put my latest book releases at the top to catch readers’ attention.

  • Keep it updated: Every time I launch a new book or update my website, I add or remove links to keep things fresh.

This simple step helped me feel more in control of my author life and made it easier for readers to find everything they need in one click.

Wrestling with a Budget Windows 10 Machine Running Windows 11

Technology can be a blessing and a curse. My budget Windows 10 machine was never the fastest, but after upgrading to Windows 11, it started acting up. Programs crashed, updates stalled, and sometimes the system froze. As an indie author, I rely on my computer for editing, formatting, and managing files, so this was frustrating.

Here’s how I managed the situation with patience and breaks: When the computer froze, I took breaks to avoid frustration and returned with a fresh mindset.

This experience reminded me that technology isn’t always perfect, but with some patience and planning, I could keep my author life moving forward. I ended up turning to Claude AI to help with editing and formatting.

Writing Books from My Phone

One of the biggest surprises in my author journey has been how much I can accomplish just using my phone. Writing on the go is a game-changer, especially when inspiration strikes outside my usual workspace.

Here’s how I make mobile writing work:

  • Claude AI app: I've tried a few apps to help me out, but I found Claude to be the most helpful. As with any AI, though, you can't let yourself lean on it too heavily.

  • Sync across devices: Cloud syncing means I can start a chapter on my phone and finish it on a computer at the library without losing anything.

  • Voice-to-text: Dictation helps when I’m walking or can’t type easily. This helps me a lot. Typing is cumbersome on a phone.

  • Take breaks and eat: Stretching your legs and getting some fresh air helps a lot for keeping focused. Staying hydrated and eating healthy are also helpful.

For a paranormal romance author like me, this flexibility means I can keep crafting stories about werewolves and other supernatural beings no matter where I am.

Tips for Indie Authors Balancing Tech and Creativity

If you’re an indie author or someone who writes about werewolf romance or other paranormal themes, here are some practical tips from my experience:

  • Keep your online presence simple and clear: Use tools like Linktree or a dedicated author website to avoid scattering your links.

  • Prepare for tech glitches: Back up your work often and have a plan for when your main device fails. Remember: Phones and Computers are only as smart as the guy that programmed it.

  • Embrace mobile writing: Use your phone to capture ideas and write drafts, especially when you’re away from your computer. Having written The Alpha's Compassion entirely on my phone, until I get my laptop back to Windows 10, I'm stuck.

  • Choose software wisely: Lightweight apps can save you from frustration on older or slower machines. Brave, the browser I use works almost like Chrome. It just doesn't take as many resources.

  • Stay organized: Keep track of your links, book versions, and writing goals to maintain momentum.

Staying Connected with Readers

A unified online presence not only helps you stay organized but also makes it easier for readers to connect with your work. As a self-publishing author, I’ve found that clear, accessible links encourage readers to explore my books, sign up for newsletters, and follow me on social media. This connection is vital for building a loyal audience in the paranormal romance community.

Final Thoughts on Author Life and Technology

The author life is full of surprises, from unexpected tech challenges to the joy of writing anywhere, anytime. Bringing my website together, managing my Linktree, and writing from my phone have all helped me stay productive despite the hurdles. Direct and encouraging: You don't need perfect tools or a perfect setup. You just need to keep going. If I can write a whole novel from my phone, you can figure out whatever's standing in your way. Tech will fail you. Life will get in the way. Write anyway.
